• [Luk 2:49] Jesus A Child His Work Begun

  Jesus a child His work begun: How radiant dawned His heavenly day! And those who such a race would run As early should be on their way. His Father’s business was His care; Yet in man’s favor still He grew; O might we learn by thought and prayer, Like Him a work of love to do! For all mankind He came, nor yet An infant’s visit would deny; Nor friend nor mother did forget In His last hour of agony. O children, ask Him to impart That spirit clear, that temper mild, Which made the mother in her heart Keep all the sayings of her Child. Bless Him Who said, of such as you His Father’s kingdom is: and still, His yoke to bear, His work to do, Study His life to learn His will.

  O Master Workman of the race, Thou Man of Galilee, Who with the eyes of early youth eternal things did see, We thank Thee for Thy boyhood faith that shone Thy whole life through; “Did ye not know it is My work, My Father’s work to do?” O Carpenter of Nazareth, Builder of life divine, Who shapest man to God’s own law, Thyself the fair design, Build us a tower of Christlike height, that we the land may view, And see, like Thee, our noblest work, our Father’s work to do. O Thou Who dost the vision send and givest each his task, And with the task sufficient strength, show us Thy will, we ask; Give us a conscience bold and good, give us a purpose true, That it may be our highest joy our Father’s work to do.

  Let us be about our Father’s business, Ev’ry day, as we go On our way here below: Never let it suffer thro’ remissness, But seek to make it thrive and grow. Refrain Then respond to the call, He has use for us all, And His work is a labor of love; And the days soon will come In the great Harvest Home, For our rest and rejoicing above. Do you ask what is the work He sends us? ’Tis whate’er we can do, ’Tis to bear and be true, And to use the talents that He lends us, That others may accept Him too.   We know Thee Who Thou art, Lord Jesus, Mary’s Son; We know the yearnings of Thy heart To end Thy work begun. That sacred Fount of grace, ’Mid all the bliss of Heaven, Has joy whene’er we seek Thy face, And kneel to be forgiven. Brought home from ways perverse, At peace Thine arms within, We pray Thee, shield us from the curse Of falling back to sin. We dare not ask to live Henceforth from trials free; But oh! when next they tempt us, give More strength to cling to Thee. We know Thee Who Thou art, Our own redeeming Lord; Be Thou by will, and mind, and heart, Accepted, loved, adored.

  Up Calvary’s mountain, one dreadful morn, Walked Christ my Savior, weary and worn; Facing for sinners death on the cross, That He might save them from endless loss. Refrain Blessèd Redeemer! Precious Redeemer! Seems now I see Him on Calvary’s tree; Wounded and bleeding, for sinners pleading, Blind and unheeding—dying for me! “Father forgive them!” thus did He pray, E’en while His lifeblood flowed fast away; Praying for sinners while in such woe No one but Jesus ever loved so.   “Father, forgive,” the Savior said “They know not what they do”; His heart was moved when thus He prayed For me, my friends, and you. He saw, that as the Jews abused And crucified His flesh, So He, by us, would be refused, And crucified afresh. Through love of sin, we long were prone To act as Satan bid; But now, with grief and shame we own, We knew not what we did. We knew not the desert of sin, Nor Whom we thus defied; Nor where our guilty souls had been, If Jesus had not died. We knew not what a law we broke, How holy, just and pure! Nor what a God we durst provoke, But thought ourselves secure. But Jesus all our guilt foresaw, And shed His precious blood To satisfy the holy law, And make our peace with God. My sin, dear Savior, made Thee bleed, Yet didst Thou pray for me! I knew not what I did, indeed, When ignorant of Thee.

• [Luk 23:34] Forgive Them, O My Father

  “Forgive them, O my Father, They know not what they do.” The Savior spoke in anguish, As sharp iron nails went through. No word of anger spoke He To them that shed His blood, But prayer and tenderest pity Large as the love of God. For me was that compassion, For me that tender care; I need His wide forgiveness As much as any there. It was my pride and hardness That hung Him on the tree; Those cruel nails, O Savior, Were driven in by me. And often I have slighted Thy gentle voice that said: Forgive me too, Lord Jesus, I knew not what I did. O depth of sweet compassion! O love divine and true! Save Thou the souls that slight Thee, And know not what they do.

  Jesus, in Thy dying woes, Even while Thy lifeblood floes, Craving pardon for Thy foes; Hear us, holy Jesus. O may we, who mercy need, Be like Thee in heart and deed, When with wrong our spirits bleed: Hear us, holy Jesus. • [Luk 23:34] O Word Of Pity, For Our Pardon Pleading

  O word of pity, for our pardon pleading, Breathed in the hour of loneliness and pain; O voice, which through the ages interceding, Calls us to fellowship with God again. O word of comfort, through the silence stealing, As the dread act of sacrifice began; O infinite compassion, still revealing The infinite forgiveness won for man. O word of hope to raise us nearer heaven, When courage fails us and when faith is dim; The souls for whom Christ prays to Christ are given, To find their pardon and their joy in Him. O Intercessor, who art ever living To plead for dying souls that they may live, Teach us to know our sin which needs forgiving, Teach us to know the love which can forgive.
