Luke 14:31

Context
14:31 Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down 1  first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose 2  the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

Luke 15:8

Context

15:8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins 3  and loses 4  one of them, 5  does not light a lamp, sweep 6  the house, and search thoroughly until she finds it?

1 tn The participle καθίσας (kaqisa") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

2 tn On the meaning of this verb see also L&N 55.3, “to meet in battle, to face in battle.”

3 sn This silver coin is a drachma, equal to a denarius, that is, a day’s pay for the average laborer.

4 tn Grk “What woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses.” The initial participle ἔχουσα (ecousa) has been translated as a finite verb parallel to ἀπολέσῃ (apolesh) in the conditional clause to improve the English style.

5 tn Grk “one coin.”

6 tn Grk “and sweep,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
