Luke 22:50

Context
22:50 Then 8  one of them 9  struck the high priest’s slave, 10  cutting off his right ear.

1 tn Jesus calls for some personal reflection. However, this unit probably does connect to the previous one – thus the translation of δέ (de) here as “And” – to make a good spiritual assessment, thus calling for application to the spiritual, rather than personal, realm.

2 tn Grk “And there.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

3 tn Grk “behold.” The Greek word ἰδού (idou) at the beginning of this statement adds interest and emphasis (BDAG 468 s.v. 1). Here it has been translated as “right” in the phrase “right in front of him,” giving a similar effect of vividness in the translation.

4 sn The condition called dropsy involves swollen limbs resulting from the accumulation of fluid in the body’s tissues, especially the legs.

5 tn Or “lawful,” that is, in accordance with God’s divine law. On the syntax of ἔξεστιν (exestin) with an infinitive and accusative, see BDF §409.3.

6 tn This was a “poll tax.” L&N 57.182 states this was “a payment made by the people of one nation to another, with the implication that this is a symbol of submission and dependence – ‘tribute tax.’”

7 tn Or “to the emperor” (“Caesar” is a title for the Roman emperor).

8 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

9 sn One of them. The unnamed disciple is Peter according to John 18:10 (cf. also Matt 26:51; Mark 14:47).

10 tn See the note on the word “slave” in 7:2.
