Luke 12:24

Context
12:24 Consider the ravens: 1  They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds 2  them. How much more valuable are you than the birds!

Luke 19:21

Context
19:21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe 3  man. You withdraw 4  what you did not deposit 5  and reap what you did not sow.’

1 tn Or “crows.” Crows and ravens belong to the same family of birds. English uses “crow” as a general word for the family. Palestine has several indigenous members of the crow family.

2 tn Or “God gives them food to eat.” L&N 23.6 has both “to provide food for” and “to give food to someone to eat.”

3 tn Or “exacting,” “harsh,” “hard.”

4 tn Grk “man, taking out.” The Greek word can refer to withdrawing money from a bank (L&N 57.218), and in this context of financial accountability that is the most probable meaning. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation by supplying the pronoun “you” as subject and translating the participle αἴρεις (airei") as a finite verb.

5 tn The Greek verb τίθημι (tiqhmi) can be used of depositing money with a banker to earn interest (L&N 57.217). In effect the slave charges that the master takes what he has not earned.
