Luke 11:47

Context
11:47 Woe to you! You build 1  the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors 2  killed.

Luke 14:30

Context
14:30 They will say, 3  ‘This man 4  began to build and was not able to finish!’ 5

1 sn The effect of what the experts in the law were doing was to deny the message of the prophets and thus honor their death by supporting those who had sought their removal. The charge that this is what previous generations did shows the problem is chronic. As T. W. Manson said, the charge here is “The only prophet you honor is a dead prophet!” (The Sayings of Jesus, 101).

2 tn Or “forefathers”; Grk “fathers.”

3 tn Grk “make fun of him, saying.”

4 sn The phrase this man is often used in Luke in a derogatory sense; see “this one” and expressions like it in Luke 5:21; 7:39; 13:32; 23:4, 14, 22, 35.

5 sn The failure to finish the building project leads to embarrassment (in a culture where avoiding public shame was extremely important). The half completed tower testified to poor preparation and planning.
