Luke 11:21

Context
11:21 When a strong man, 1  fully armed, guards his own palace, 2  his possessions are safe. 3

Luke 15:27

Context
15:27 The slave replied, 4  ‘Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf 5  because he got his son 6  back safe and sound.’

1 tn The referent of the expression “a strong man” is Satan.

2 tn The word αὐλή (aulh) describes any building large and elaborate enough to have an interior courtyard, thus “dwelling, palace, mansion” (L&N 7.6).

3 tn Grk “his goods are in peace.”

4 tn Grk “And he said to him.” Here δέ (de) has not been translated. The rest of the phrase has been simplified to “the slave replied,” with the referent (the slave) specified in the translation for clarity.

5 tn See note on the phrase “fattened calf” in v. 23.

6 tn Grk “him”; the referent (the younger son) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
