Luke 18:12

Context
18:12 I fast twice 5  a week; I give a tenth 6  of everything I get.’

1 sn John’s role, to give his people knowledge of salvation, is similar to that of Jesus (Luke 3:1-14; 5:31-32).

2 sn Forgiveness is another major Lukan theme (Luke 4:18; 24:47; Acts 10:37).

3 sn The two questions of vv. 11-12 expect the answer, “No father would do this!”

4 sn Jesus’ point in calling the man a foreigner is that none of the other nine, who were presumably Israelites, responded with gratitude. Only the “outsiders” were listening and responding.

5 sn The law only required fasting on the Day of Atonement. Such voluntary fasting as this practiced twice a week by the Pharisee normally took place on Monday and Thursday.

6 tn Or “I tithe.”
