Luke 16:29

Context
16:29 But Abraham said, 7  ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to 8  them.’

1 tn Grk “as he spoke.” Since this is a reference to the covenant to Abraham, ἐλάλησεν (elalhsen) can be translated in context “as he promised.” God keeps his word.

2 tn Grk “fathers.”

3 tn Grk “his seed” (an idiom for offspring or descendants).

4 tn This is linked back grammatically by apposition to “covenant” in v. 72, specifying which covenant is meant.

5 tn Or “forefather”; Grk “father.”

6 tn Again for reasons of English style, the infinitival clause “to grant us” has been translated “This oath grants” and made the beginning of a new sentence in the translation.

7 tn Grk “says.” This is one of the few times Luke uses the historical present.

8 tn Or “obey”; Grk “hear.” This recalls the many OT texts calling for a righteous heart to respond to people in need (Deut 14:28-29; Isa 3:14-15; Amos 2:6-8; Mic 2:1-2; Zech 7:9-10).
