  Now yield we thanks and praise to Christ enthroned in glory, And on this day of days tell out redemption’s story, Who truly have believed that on this blessèd morn, In holiness conceived, the Son of God was born. What tribute shall we pay to Him who came in weakness, And in a manger lay to teach His people meekness? Let every house be bright; let praises never cease; With mercies infinite our Christ hath brought us peace.

• [Luk 3:16] One Who Is All Unfit To Count

  One who is all unfit to count As scholar in Thy school, Thou of Thy love hast named a friend O kindness wonderful! So weak I am, O gracious Lord, So all unworthy Thee, That even the dust upon Thy feet Outweighs me utterly. Thou dwellest in unshadowed light, All sin and shame above That Thou shouldst bear our sin and shame, How can I tell such love? Ah, did not He the heavenly throne A little thing esteem, And not unworthy for my sake A mortal body deem? When in His flesh they drove the nails, Did He not all endure? What name is there to fit a life So patient and so pure? So, Love itself in human form, For love of me He came; I cannot look upon His face For shame, for bitter shame. If there is aught of worth in me It comes from Thee alone; Then keep me safe, for so, O Lord, Thou keepest but Thine own.

Luke 8:23-24

• [Luk 8:23] When The Storms Of Life Surround Me

  When the storms of life surround me, And the world seems dark and cold, When the rain beats down upon me, And the lightning stabs my soul, I cry out to my Savior, “Lord, help me, lest I die! Do You care not that the billows Push my boat toward the shoal?” When the raging winds and tempest, And the noxious clouds of sin, Whirl around me like an army, And my faith is wearing thin, In a whispering distant thunder, Comes a voice like morning calm: “Fear not, I am with you ever, Till the world shall see its end. “I command the winds of heaven, And the lightning does My will, I Who walked upon the waters, And Who bid the storm be still. I seek not your destruction, But to strengthen and make pure; Keep your faith in Me, believing I My promises fulfill.” He is greater than the thunder, He is mightier than the storm; He extends His hand to lift me, And protect my soul from harm. He will see me safe to harbor, To the haven of my rest, Sheltered by the Rock of Ages, Held in His almighty arm.

• [Luk 9:26] In Token That Thou Shalt Not Fear

  In token that thou shalt not fear Christ crucified to own, We print the cross upon thee here, And stamp thee His alone. In token that thou shalt not blush To glory in His Name, We blazon here upon thy front His glory and His shame. In token that thou shalt not flinch Christ’s quarrel to maintain, But ’neath His banner manfully Firm at thy post remain. In token that thou too shalt tread The path He traveled by, Endure the cross, despise the shame, And sit thee down on high. Thus outwardly and visibly We seal thee for His own; And may the brow that wears His cross Hereafter share His crown.

  At first I prayed for light: Could I but see the way, How gladly, swiftly would I walk To everlasting day! And next I prayed for strength: That I might tread the road With firm, unfaltering feet, and win The heavens’ serene abode. And then I prayed for faith: Could I but trust my God, I’d live infolded in His peace, Though foes were all abroad. But now I pray for love: Deep love to God and man; A living love that will not fail, However dark His plan. And light and strength and faith Are opening everywhere! God waited patiently until I prayed the larger prayer.

• [Luk 11:1] Lord, Teach Us How To Pray Aright

  Lord, teach us how to pray aright, With reverence and with fear; Though dust and ashes in Thy sight, We may, we must draw near. We perish if we cease from prayer; O grant us power to pray; And when to meet Thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. God of all grace, we come to Thee With broken, contrite hearts; Give what Thine eye delights to see, Truth in the inward parts. Faith in the only sacrifice That can for sin atone; To cast our hopes, to fix our eyes, On Christ, on Christ alone. Patience to watch, and wait, and weep, Though mercy long delay; Courage our fainting souls to keep, And trust Thee though Thou slay. Give these, and then Thy will be done, Thus, strengthened with all might, We, through Thy Spirit and Thy Son, Shall pray, and pray aright.

  Now from the world withdrawn, For fellowship with Thee; May each, O Lord, before Thy throne, From earthly cares be free. Possess our every thought, And teach our minds to pray; Help us to worship as we ought, And thus conclude the day. Our strength may we renew, And lift our hearts above; That, while life’s journey we pursue, We still may walk in love. Then, in our latter end, If death shall close our eyes, Thy mercy will our souls attend, And bear them to the skies.

• [Luk 11:1] Prayer Is The Soul’s Sincere Desire

  Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, Unuttered or expressed; The motion of a hidden fire That trembles in the breast. Prayer is the burden of a sigh, The falling of a tear The upward glancing of an eye, When none but God is near. Prayer is the simplest form of speech That infant lips can try; Prayer, the sublimest strains That reach The Majesty on high. Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath, The Christian’s native air, His watchword at the gates of death; He enters Heav’n with prayer. Prayer is the contrite sinner’s voice, Returning from his ways, While angels in their songs rejoice And cry, “Behold, he prays!” The saints in prayer appear as one In word, in deed, and mind, While with the Father and the Son Sweet fellowship they find. No prayer is made by man alone The Holy Spirit pleads, And Jesus, on th’eternal throne, For sinners intercedes. O Thou by Whom we come to God, The Life, the Truth, the Way, The path of prayer Thyself hast trod: Lord, teach us how to pray.

  When cold our hearts, and far from Thee Our wandering spirits stray, And thoughts and lips move heavily; Lord, teach us how to pray. Too vile to venture near Thy throne, Too poor to turn away; Our only voice—Thy Spirit’s groan— Lord, teach us how to pray. We know not how to seek Thy face Unless Thou lead the way; We have no words, unless Thy grace, Lord, teach us how to pray.   Our mighty God works mighty wonders— What joy, to seem them all around! Men’s idols fall before His thunders, Their altars crumbling to the ground. He breaks the fetters, frees the slaves, His fallen children still He saves. His mighty Word goes forth to conquer, Its power destroys the forts of doubt. The warriors bold yield up their armor To Him Who will not cast them out. They cleansing find in Jesus’ blood And laud and magnify our God. Behold the host of brethren nearing The gates of Heav’n with mighty tread, With banners waving, singing, cheering, They hail in joy their Royal Head; And many more shall own His reign, His wondrous love the victory gain. O God, be praised! the day is nearing, When to our ears a voice shall come, “Look up, the Lord is now appearing, To gather all His loved ones home!” O blessèd day of jubilee! For thee I wait! I wait for thee!

  Jesus, let Thy pitying eye Call back a wandering sheep; False to Thee, like Peter, I Would fain, like Peter, weep. Let me be by grace restored; On me be all long-suffering shown; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. Savior, Prince, enthroned above, Repentance to impart, Give me, through Thy dying love, The humble, contrite heart; Give what I have long implored, A portion of Thy grief unknown; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. See me, Savior, from above, Nor suffer me to die; Life, and happiness, and love Drop from Thy gracious eye; Speak the reconciling word, And let Thy mercy melt me down; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. Look, as when Thy languid eye Was closed that we might live; “Father,” at the point to die My Savior prayed, “forgive!” Surely, with that dying word, He turns, and looks, and cries, “’Tis done!” O my bleeding, loving Lord, Thou break’st my heart of stone!
