  From east to west, from shore to shore, Let every heart awake and sing The holy Child Whom Mary bore, The Christ, the everlasting King. Behold, the world’s Creator wears The form and fashion of a slave; Our very flesh our Maker shares, His fallen creature, man, to save. For this how wondrously He wrought! A maiden, in her lowly place, Became, in ways beyond all thought, The chosen vessel of His grace. She bowed her to the angel’s word Declaring what the Father willed, And suddenly the promised Lord That pure and hallowed temple filled. He shrank not from the oxen’s stall, He lay within the manger bed, And He whose bounty feedeth all At Mary’s breast Himself was fed. And while the angels in the sky Sang praise above the silent field, To shepherds poor the Lord Most High, The one great Shepherd, was revealed.   Believe not those who say The upward path is smooth, Lest thou should stumble in the way, And faint before the truth. It is the only road Unto the realms of joy; But he who seeks that blest abode Must all his powers employ. To labor and to love, To pardon and endure, To lift thy heart to God above, And keep thy conscience pure. Be this thy constant aim, Thy hope, thy chief delight, What matter who should whisper blame Or who should scorn or slight. What matters—if God approve, And if within thy breast, Thou feel the comfort of His love, The earnest of His rest?

• [Luk 15:21] O Great God Of Nations

  O great God of nations, revive us, we pray, Raise prodigal hearts to contrition today; In pride have we turned from Your life giving Word, Embracing the darkness while truth goes unheard. Create deep within us a clean heart today, Renew a right spirit, and teach us to say: Awaken, my soul, and send anthems above, To Him Who is yearning to bless you in love. Forsake not Your people though far we do roam, As hedonists, spendthrifts, abandoning home; But finally, throwing our folly aside, We see You are waiting with arms open wide. We plead Your forgiveness, our Father, we pray, O heal prideful blindness and teach us to say: How mighty the love that can conquer our sin, And open the door to the banquet within. In faith and in gratitude, then, must we share The good news of Jesus with lands everywhere, With peoples still groping and stumbling in night; For them You command us to send out the light. To shout from the rooftops, proclaim o’er the wave, That Christ has redeemed from the depths of the grave: Pour out, then, Your Spirit, afresh in this hour, Enable our tongues to speak out with Your power.

  “Forgive them, O my Father, They know not what they do.” The Savior spoke in anguish, As sharp iron nails went through. No word of anger spoke He To them that shed His blood, But prayer and tenderest pity Large as the love of God. For me was that compassion, For me that tender care; I need His wide forgiveness As much as any there. It was my pride and hardness That hung Him on the tree; Those cruel nails, O Savior, Were driven in by me. And often I have slighted Thy gentle voice that said: Forgive me too, Lord Jesus, I knew not what I did. O depth of sweet compassion! O love divine and true!   O word of pity, for our pardon pleading, Breathed in the hour of loneliness and pain; O voice, which through the ages interceding, Calls us to fellowship with God again. O word of comfort, through the silence stealing, As the dread act of sacrifice began; O infinite compassion, still revealing The infinite forgiveness won for man.   And now, belovèd Lord, Thy Soul resigning, Into Thy Father’s arms with conscious will, Calmly, with reverend grace, Thy head inclining, The throbbing brow and laboring breast grow still. Freely Thy life Thou yieldest, meekly bending E’en to the last beneath our sorrows’ load, Yet strong in death, in perfect peace commending, Thy Spirit to Thy Father and Thy God. My Savior, in mine hour of mortal anguish, When earth grows dim, and round me falls the night, O breathe Thy peace, as flesh and spirit languish, At that dread eventide let there be light. To Thy dear cross turn Thou my eyes in dying; Lay but my fainting head upon Thy breast; Those outstretched arms receive my latest sighing; And then, oh! then, Thine everlasting rest. Oracles of former ages, Veiled in dim prophetic pages, Now lie open to the sight; Now the types, which glimmered darkling In the twilight gloom, are sparkling, In the blaze of noonday light. Isaac from the wood is risen; Joseph issues from the prison; See the Paschal Lamb which saves; Israel through the sea is landed, Pharaoh and his hosts are stranded, And o’erwhelmèd in the waves. See the cloudy pillar leading, Rock refreshing, manna feeding; Joshua fights and Moses prays; See the lifted wave-sheaf, cheering Pledge of harvest-fruits appearing, Joyful dawn of happy days.
