  The angel Gabriel from Heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favored lady,” Gloria! “For know a blessèd mother thou shalt be, All generations laud and honor thee, Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, Most highly favored lady,” Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “My soul shall laud and magnify His holy Name.” Most highly favored lady, Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say— “Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

  Gabriel, from the Heaven descending, On the faithful Word attending, Is in holy converse blending With the virgin full of grace: That good word and sweet he plighteth In the bosom where it lighteth, And for Eva Ave writeth, Changing Eva’s name and race. At the promise that he sendeth God the Incarnate Word descendeth; Yet no carnal touch offendeth Her, the undefilèd one. She, without a father, beareth, She no bridal union shareth, And a painless birth declareth That she bare the Royal Son. Tale that wondering search entices! But believe—and that suffices; It is not for man’s devices Here to pry with gaze unmeet: High the sign, its place assuming In the bush, the unconsuming: Mortal, veil thine eyes presuming, Loose thy shoes from off thy feet. As the rod, by wondrous power, Moistened not by dew or shower, Bare the almond and the flower, Thus He came, the virgin’s fruit: Hail the Fruit, O world, with gladness! Fruit of joy and not of sadness: Adam had not lapsed to madness Had he tasted of its shoot. Jesus, kind above all other, Gentle Child of gentle mother, In the stable born our Brother, Whom the angelic hosts adore: He, once cradled in a manger, Heal our sin and calm our danger; For our life, to this world stranger, Is in peril evermore.

  O daughters blest of Galilee, With Jesus chose ye well to be, Thrice happy holy company. O joy, to see that Master dear! O joy, to live with Him so near! O joy, that gentle voice to hear! O more than joy, to that dear Lord, In purest, deepest love adored, All lowly service to afford. Yea, happy was your lot to bring In loyal homage to your King Each free and gracious offering. O Jesus, throned above the height, Adoring troops of angels bright Wait on Thy bidding day and night. Thy sacred form we cannot see, Yet, Lord, these hands may render Thee Each lowly act of charity. For while, ’mid want and woe we move, And tend Thy poor in gentle love, We minister to Thee above. O gracious Jesus, we confess, Our poor cold love, our nothingness: Yet Thou wilt own, and Thou wilt bless.

Luke 15:21

• [Luk 15:21] O Great God Of Nations

  O great God of nations, revive us, we pray, Raise prodigal hearts to contrition today; In pride have we turned from Your life giving Word, Embracing the darkness while truth goes unheard. Create deep within us a clean heart today, Renew a right spirit, and teach us to say: Awaken, my soul, and send anthems above, To Him Who is yearning to bless you in love. Forsake not Your people though far we do roam, As hedonists, spendthrifts, abandoning home; But finally, throwing our folly aside, We see You are waiting with arms open wide. We plead Your forgiveness, our Father, we pray, O heal prideful blindness and teach us to say: How mighty the love that can conquer our sin, And open the door to the banquet within. In faith and in gratitude, then, must we share The good news of Jesus with lands everywhere, With peoples still groping and stumbling in night; For them You command us to send out the light. To shout from the rooftops, proclaim o’er the wave, That Christ has redeemed from the depths of the grave: Pour out, then, Your Spirit, afresh in this hour, Enable our tongues to speak out with Your power.
