  Let thine example, holy John, remind us, Ere we can meetly sing thy deeds of wonder, Hearts must be chastened, and the bonds that bind us Broken asunder! Lo! a swift angel, from the skies descending, Tells to thy father what shall be thy naming; All thy life’s greatness to its bitter ending Duly proclaiming. But when he doubted what the angel told him Came to him dumbness to confirm the story; At thine appearing, healed again behold him, Chanting thy glory! Oh! what a splendor and a revelation Came to each mother, at thy joyful leaping, Greeting thy Monarch, King of every nation, In the womb sleeping. Angels in orders everlasting praise Thee, God, in Thy triune majesty tremendous, Hark to the prayers we, penitents, upraise Thee: Save and defend us.

• [Luk 2:27] In His Temple Now Behold Him

  In His temple now behold Him, See the long expected Lord; Ancient prophets had foretold Him— God has now fulfilled His word. Now to praise Him, His redeemèd Shall break forth with one accord. In the arms of her who bore Him, Virgin pure, behold Him lie, While his agèd saints adore Him Ere in faith and hope they die. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Lo, th’incarnate God most high. Jesus, by Thy presentation, Thou, who didst for us endure, Make us see our great salvation, Seal us with Thy promise sure. And present us in Thy glory To Thy Father, cleansed and pure. Prince and Author of salvation, Be Thy boundless love our theme! Jesus, praise to Thee be given By the world Thou didst redeem. With the Father and the Spirit, Lord of majesty supreme!

• [Luk 18:16] Friend Of The Home

  Friend of the home: as when in Galilee The mothers brought their little ones to Thee, So we, dear Lord, would now the children bring, And seek for them the shelter of Thy wing. Thine are they, by Thy love’s eternal claim, Thine we baptize them in the threefold Name; Yet not the sign we trust, Lord, but the grace That in Thy fold prepared the lambs a place. Lord, may Thy Church, as with a mother’s care, For Thee the lambs within her bosom bear; And grant, as morning grows to noon, that they Still in her love and holy service stay. Draw through the child the parents nearer Thee, Endue their home with growing sanctity; And gather all, by earthly homes made one, In Heaven, O Christ, when earthly days are done.

• [Luk 18:16] I Think, When I Read That Sweet Story

  I think, when I read that sweet story of old, When Jesus was here among men, How He called little children as lambs to His fold, I should like to have been with them then. I wish that His hands had been placed on my head, That His arms had been thrown around me, And that I might have seen His kind look when He said, “Let the little ones come unto Me.” Yet still to His foot stool in prayer I may go; And ask for a share in His love; And if I thus earnestly seek Him below, I shall see Him and hear Him above. But thousands and thousands who wander and fall, Never heard of that heavenly home; I wish they could know there is room for them all, And that Jesus has bid them to come. In that beautiful place He has gone to prepare For all who are washed and forgiven; And many dear children shall be with Him there, For “of such is the kingdom of heaven.” I long for the joy of that glorious time, The sweetest and brightest and best, When the dear little children of every clime Shall crowd to His arms and be blest.

• [Luk 18:16] It Fell Upon A Summer Day

  It fell upon a summer day, When Jesus walked in Galilee, The mothers from a village brought Their children to His knee. He took them in His arms, and laid His hands on each remembered head; “Suffer these little ones to come To Me,” He gently said. “Forbid them not. Unless ye bear The childlike heart your hearts within, Unto My kingdom ye may come, But may not enter in.” Master, I fain would enter there; O let me follow Thee and share Thy meek and lowly heart, and be Freed from all worldly care. Of innocence, and love, and trust, Of quiet work, and simple word, Of joy, and thoughtlessness of self, Build up my life, good Lord. All happy thoughts, and gentle ways, And lovingkindness daily given, And freedom through obedience gained, Make in my heart Thy heaven. O happy thus to live and move! And sweet this world, where I shall find God’s beauty everywhere, His love, His good in all mankind. O Father, grant this childlike heart, That I may come to Christ, and feel His hands on me in blessing laid, Love-giving, strong to heal.

  Oh, come, little children, oh, come, one and all, To Bethlehem’s stable, in Bethlehem’s stall. And see with rejoicing this glorious sight, Our Father in heaven has sent us this night. Oh, see in the manger, in hallowèd light A star throws its beam on this holiest sight. In clean swaddling clothes lies the heavenly Child, More lovely than angels, this Baby so mild. Oh, there lies the Christ Child, on hay and on straw; The shepherds are kneeling before Him with awe. And Mary and Joseph smile on Him with love, While angels are singing sweet songs from above.

• [Luk 22:19] According To Thy Gracious Word

  According to Thy gracious word, In meek humility, This will I do, my dying Lord, I will remember Thee. Thy body, broken for my sake, My bread from Heaven shall be; The testamental cup I take, And thus remember Thee. Gethsemane can I forget? Or there Thy conflict see, Thine agony, and bloody sweat, And not remember Thee? When to the cross I turn mine eyes, And rest on Calvary, O Lamb of God, my sacrifice, I must remember Thee; Remember Thee, and all Thy pains And all Thy love to me; Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains, Will I remember Thee. And when these failing lips grow dumb And mind and memory flee, When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come, Jesus, remember me.

• [Luk 22:19] Do This; Remember Me!

  Our Lord and His disciples at table were as one, And Jesus thought of the morrow, His work here nearly done. With one last night together, they knew not what would be, But Jesus had one final word: “Do This; Remember Me!” Thanksgiving to the Father, an ancient feast made new. Christ said, “This is My body, My body giv’n for you.” The holy bread was broken and shared with Jesus’ plea That His words not be forgotten: “Do This; Remember Me!” He took the cup of blessing, the blood of Jesus shed That all might know forgiveness, received when Jesus bled. Salvation now available to all on bended knee Who repent and follow His command: “Do This; Remember Me!” Yes, Christ’s command continues to all who serve His Name To go and make disciples, that all would sing His fame. And gathered at one table His holy church shall see Our Master is still calling: “Do This; Remember Me!”

  Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory, Of His flesh the mystery sing, Of the blood, all price exceeding, Shed by our immortal King, Destined, for the world’s redemption, From a noble womb to spring. Of a pure and spotless virgin, Born for us, His love to show, He, as man, with man conversing, Stayed, the seeds of truth to sow; Then He closed in wondrous fashion, This His life on earth below. On the night of that Last Supper, Seated with His chosen band, He, the paschal victim eating, First fulfills the law’s command; Then as food to all His brethren Gives Himself with His own hand. Christ, the Word made Flesh, by speaking, Earthly bread to flesh He turns; Wine becomes His blood so precious— Unconceived in human terms! Hearts sincere perceive this marvel; Faith its lessons quickly learns. Down in adoration falling, This great sacrament we hail; Over ancient forms of worship Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith tells us that Christ is present When our human senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son Who made us free, And the Spirit, God proceeding, From them each eternally, Be salvation, honor, blessing, Might and endless majesty.

  Sweet feast of love divine! ’Tis grace that makes us free To feed upon this bread and wine, In memory, Lord, of Thee. Here every welcome guest Waits, Lord, from Thee to learn The secrets of Thy Father’s breast, And all Thy grace discern. Here conscience ends its strife, And faith delights to prove The sweetness of the bread of life, The fullness of Thy love. Thy blood that flowed for sin, In symbol here we see, And feel the blessèd pledge within, That we are loved of Thee.
