  Let thine example, holy John, remind us, Ere we can meetly sing thy deeds of wonder, Hearts must be chastened, and the bonds that bind us Broken asunder! Lo! a swift angel, from the skies descending, Tells to thy father what shall be thy naming; All thy life’s greatness to its bitter ending Duly proclaiming. But when he doubted what the angel told him Came to him dumbness to confirm the story; At thine appearing, healed again behold him, Chanting thy glory! Oh! what a splendor and a revelation Came to each mother, at thy joyful leaping, Greeting thy Monarch, King of every nation, In the womb sleeping. Angels in orders everlasting praise Thee, God, in Thy triune majesty tremendous, Hark to the prayers we, penitents, upraise Thee: Save and defend us.

• [Luk 1:35] Now Yield We Thanks And Praise

  Now yield we thanks and praise to Christ enthroned in glory, And on this day of days tell out redemption’s story, Who truly have believed that on this blessèd morn, In holiness conceived, the Son of God was born. What tribute shall we pay to Him who came in weakness, And in a manger lay to teach His people meekness? Let every house be bright; let praises never cease; With mercies infinite our Christ hath brought us peace.

• [Luk 3:16] One Who Is All Unfit To Count

  One who is all unfit to count As scholar in Thy school, Thou of Thy love hast named a friend O kindness wonderful! So weak I am, O gracious Lord, So all unworthy Thee, That even the dust upon Thy feet Outweighs me utterly. Thou dwellest in unshadowed light, All sin and shame above That Thou shouldst bear our sin and shame, How can I tell such love? Ah, did not He the heavenly throne A little thing esteem, And not unworthy for my sake A mortal body deem? When in His flesh they drove the nails, Did He not all endure? What name is there to fit a life So patient and so pure? So, Love itself in human form, For love of me He came; I cannot look upon His face For shame, for bitter shame. If there is aught of worth in me It comes from Thee alone; Then keep me safe, for so, O Lord, Thou keepest but Thine own.

  Come, gracious Spirit, heav’nly Dove, With light and comfort from above; Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide, O’er every thought and step preside, O’er every thought and step preside. The light of truth to us display, And make us know and choose Thy way; Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from God may ne’er depart, That we from God may ne’er depart. Lead us to holiness, the road Which we must take to dwell with God; Lead us to Christ, the living way, Nor let us from His pastures stray, Nor let us from His pastures stray. Lead us to God, our final rest, To be with Him forever blest; Lead us to Heav’n, its bliss to share, Fullness of joy forever there, Fullness of joy forever there.

  Gracious Spirit, Dove divine, Let Thy light within me shine; All my guilty fears remove, Fill me full of Heav’n and love. Speak Thy pardoning grace to me, Set the burdened sinner free; Lead me to the Lamb of God, Wash me in His precious blood. Life and peace to me impart, Seal salvation in my heart; Breathe Thyself into my breast, Earnest of immortal rest.   Come, Thou holy Paraclete, And from Thy celestial seat Send Thy light and brilliancy: Father of the poor, draw near; Giver of all gifts, be here; Come, the soul’s true radiancy. Come, of comforters the best, Of the soul the sweetest guest, Come in toil refreshingly: Thou in labor rest most sweet, Thou art shadow from the heat, Comfort in adversity. O Thou Light, most pure and blest, Shine within the inmost breast Of Thy faithful company. Where Thou art not, man hath naught; Every holy deed and thought Comes from Thy divinity. What is soilèd, make Thou pure; What is wounded, work its cure; What is parchèd, fructify; What is rigid, gently bend; What is frozen, warmly tend; Strengthen what goes erringly. Fill Thy faithful, who confide In Thy power to guard and guide, With Thy sevenfold mystery. Here Thy grace and virtue send: Grant salvation to the end, And in Heav’n felicity.
