Joshua 8:5-6

Context
8:5 I and all the troops 1  who are with me will approach the city. When they come out to fight us like before, we will retreat from them. 8:6 They will attack 2  us until we have lured them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are retreating from us like before.’ We will retreat from them.

Joshua 7:12

Context
7:12 The Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they retreat because they have become subject to annihilation. 3  I will no longer be with you, 4  unless you destroy what has contaminated you. 5 

Joshua 10:19

Context
10:19 But don’t you delay! Chase your enemies and catch them! 6  Don’t allow them to retreat to 7  their cities, for the Lord your God is handing them over to you.” 8 

1 tn Heb “the people.”

2 tn Heb “come out after.”

3 tn Heb “they turn [the] back before their enemies because they are set apart [to destruction by the Lord].”

4 tn The second person pronoun is plural in Hebrew, indicating these words are addressed to the entire nation.

5 tn Heb “what is set apart [to destruction by the Lord] from your midst.”

6 tn Heb “But [as for] you, don’t stand still, chase after your enemies and attack them from the rear.”

7 tn Or “enter into.”

8 tn Heb “has given them into your hand.” The verbal form is a perfect of certitude, emphasizing the certainty of the action.
