Joshua 2:9-10

2:9 She said to the men, “I know the Lord is handing this land over to you. 1  We are absolutely terrified of you, 2  and all who live in the land are cringing before 3  you. 4  2:10 For we heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt and how you annihilated the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, on the other side of the Jordan. 5 

Joshua 2:18

2:18 When we invade the land 6 , tie this red rope 7  in the window through which you let us down, and gather together in your house your father, mother, brothers, and all who live in your father’s house. 8

1 tn Heb “has given the land to you.” Rahab’s statement uses the Hebrew perfect, suggesting certitude.

2 tn Heb “terror of you has fallen upon us.”

3 tn Or “melting away because of.”

4 tn Both of these statements are actually subordinated to “I know” in the Hebrew text, which reads, “I know that the Lord…and that terror of you…and that all the inhabitants….”

5 tn Heb “and what you did to the two Amorite kings who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon and Og, how you annihilated them.”

An emendation of the first עַד (’ad) to עַל (’al) yields a more likely reading: “for until now” (see HALOT 2:787).

18 sn Israel’s God is here identified with three names: (1) אֵל (’el), “El” (or “God”); (2) אֱלֹהִים (’elohim), “Elohim” (or “God”), and (3) יְהוָה (yÿhvah), “Yahweh” (or “the Lord”). The name אֵל (’el, “El”) is often compounded with titles, for example, El Elyon, “God Most High.”

19 tn Heb “he knows.”

20 tn Heb “if in rebellion or if in unfaithfulness against the Lord.”

21 tn Heb “do not save us.” The verb form is singular, being addressed to either collective Israel or the Lord himself. The LXX translates in the third person.

22 tn Heb “by building.” The prepositional phrase may be subordinated to what precedes, “if in unfaithfulness…by building.”

23 tn Heb “or if to offer up.”

24 tn Heb “or if to make.”

25 tn Or “peace offerings.”

26 tn Heb “the Lord, he will seek.” Perhaps this is a self-imprecation in an oath, “may the Lord himself punish us.”

27 tn Or “will serve.”
