Joshua 1:7

Context
1:7 Make sure you are 1  very strong and brave! Carefully obey 2  all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep! 3  Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful 4  in all you do. 5

Joshua 8:29

Context
8:29 He hung the king of Ai on a tree, leaving him exposed until evening. 6  At sunset Joshua ordered that his corpse be taken down from the tree. 7  They threw it down at the entrance of the city gate and erected over it a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day). 8

Joshua 22:27

Context
22:27 but as a reminder to us and you, 9  and to our descendants who follow us, that we will honor the Lord in his very presence 10  with burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tokens of peace. 11  Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to our descendants, ‘You have no right to worship the Lord.’ 12

Joshua 23:16

Context
23:16 If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, 13  and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, 14  the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear 15  quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

Joshua 24:7

Context
24:7 Your fathers 16  cried out for help to the Lord; he made the area between you and the Egyptians dark, 17  and then drowned them in the sea. 18  You witnessed with your very own eyes 19  what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness for a long time. 20

1 tn Or “Only be.”

2 tn Heb “so you can be careful to do.” The use of the infinitive לִשְׁמֹר (lishmor, “to keep”) after the imperatives suggests that strength and bravery will be necessary for obedience. Another option is to take the form לִשְׁמֹר as a vocative lamed (ל) with imperative (see Isa 38:20 for an example of this construction), which could be translated, “Indeed, be careful!”

3 tn Heb “commanded you.”

4 tn Heb “be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.

5 tn Heb “in all which you go.”

6 tn Heb “on a tree until evening.” The words “leaving him exposed” are supplied in the translation for clarity.

7 sn For the legal background of this action, see Deut 21:22-23.

8 tn Heb “to this day.”

9 tn Heb “but it is a witness between us and you.”

10 tn Heb “to do the service of the Lord before him.”

11 tn Or “peace offerings.”

12 tn Heb “You have no portion in the Lord.”

13 tn Heb “when you violate the covenant of the Lord your God which he commanded you.”

14 tn Heb “and you walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

15 tn Or “perish.”

16 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the fathers) has been specified in the translation for clarity (see the previous verse).

17 tn Or “put darkness between you and the Egyptians.”

18 tn Heb “and he brought over them the sea and covered them.”

19 tn Heb “your eyes saw.”

20 tn Heb “many days.”
