tn Heb “A man will not stand before you.” The second person pronouns in this verse are singular, indicating Joshua is the addressee.

 tn Heb “mouth.”

sn This law scroll must not leave your lips. The ancient practice of reading aloud to oneself as an aid to memorization is in view here.

tn Heb “read it in undertones,” or “recite it quietly” (see HALOT 1:237).

tn Heb “be careful to do.”

tn Heb “you will make your way prosperous.”

tn Heb “and be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.

tn Heb “they went and came.”

tn Heb “the pursuers.” The object (“them”) is added for clarification.

tn Heb “the ones chasing them.” This has been rendered as “their pursuers” in the translation to avoid redundancy with the preceding clause.

tn Heb “The pursuers looked in all the way and did not find [them].”

 tn Heb “the people.”

 tn Or “the shout.”

tn Heb “do not let a word come out of your mouths.”

 tn Or “the shout.”

 tn Or “the shout.”

tn Heb “by the Lord God of Israel.”

 tn Or “grumbled against.”

tn Heb “do not let your hand drop from us.”

 tn Heb “your servants!”

tn Heb “have gathered against us.”

tn Heb “As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua acted accordingly; he did not turn aside a thing from all which the Lord commanded Moses.”

tn Heb “he”; the referent (Moses) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “did not assign an inheritance.”

tn That is, “their source of food and life.”

tn Or “offerings made by fire.”

 tn Or “promised” (Heb “spoke”).

sn For the background of this observation, see Deut 18:1-2.

tn Heb “for without knowledge he killed his neighbor, and he was not hating him prior to that.”

tn Heb “Was the sin of Peor too insignificant for us, from which we have not made purification to this day? And there was a plague in the assembly of the Lord.”
