John 8:7-9
Context8:7 When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight 1 and replied, 2 “Whoever among you is guiltless 3 may be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8:8 Then 4 he bent over again and wrote on the ground.
8:9 Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, 5 until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
1 tn Or “he straightened up.”
2 tn Grk “and said to them.”
3 tn Or “sinless.”
4 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “Then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative. Greek style often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” but English style generally does not.
5 tn Or “beginning from the eldest.”
