John 7:14

Context
Teaching in the Temple

7:14 When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts 1  and began to teach. 2

John 18:30

Context
18:30 They replied, 3  “If this man 4  were not a criminal, 5  we would not have handed him over to you.” 6

1 tn Grk “to the temple.”

2 tn Or “started teaching.” An ingressive sense for the imperfect verb (“began to teach” or “started teaching”) fits well here, since the context implies that Jesus did not start his teaching at the beginning of the festival, but began when it was about half over.

3 tn Grk “They answered and said to him.”

4 tn Grk “this one.”

5 tn Or “an evildoer”; Grk “one doing evil.”

6 tn Or “would not have delivered him over.”
