John 21:21

Context
21:21 So when Peter saw him, 9  he asked Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”

1 tn Grk “many of his disciples went back to what lay behind.”

2 tn Grk “were not walking with him.”

3 tn Although the conjunction “but” is not in the Greek text, the contrast is implied (an omitted conjunction is called asyndeton).

4 tn The preposition παρά (para) followed by the genitive has the local sense preserved and can be used of one person sending another. This does not necessarily imply origin in essence or eternal generation.

5 tn Grk “and that one.”

6 sn Compare John 7:30 regarding the attempt to seize Jesus.

7 tn Grk “that one.”

8 tn The καίκαί (kaikai) construction would normally be translated “both – and”: “You have both seen him, and he is the one speaking with you.” In this instance the English semicolon was used instead because it produces a smoother and more emphatic effect in English.

9 tn Grk “saw this one.”
