Context
11:26 and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. 9  Do you believe this?”

1 tn The word “people” is not in the Greek text, but is supplied to indicate that the verb is second person plural (referring to more than the royal official alone).

2 tn Or “you never believe.” The verb πιστεύσητε (pisteushte) is aorist subjunctive and may have either nuance.

3 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

4 tn Grk “If anyone keeps.”

5 tn Grk “my word.”

6 tn Grk “he will never see death forever.” The Greek negative here is emphatic.

sn Those who keep Jesus’ words will not see death because they have already passed from death to life (cf. 5:24). In Johannine theology eternal life begins in the present rather than in the world to come.

7 tn Or “Never from the beginning of time,” Grk “From eternity.”

8 tn Grk “someone opening the eyes of a man born blind” (“opening the eyes” is an idiom referring to restoration of sight).

9 tn Grk “will never die forever.”
