John 4:23

Context
4:23 But a time 1  is coming – and now is here 2  – when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks 3  such people to be 4  his worshipers. 5

John 6:32

Context

6:32 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the solemn truth, 6  it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.

John 8:14

Context
8:14 Jesus answered, 7  “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people 8  do not know where I came from or where I am going. 9

1 tn Grk “an hour.”

2 tn “Here” is not in the Greek text but is supplied to conform to contemporary English idiom.

3 sn See also John 4:27.

4 tn Or “as.” The object-complement construction implies either “as” or “to be.”

5 tn This is a double accusative construction of object and complement with τοιούτους (toioutous) as the object and the participle προσκυνοῦντας (proskunounta") as the complement.

sn The Father wants such people as his worshipers. Note how the woman has been concerned about where people ought to worship, while Jesus is concerned about who people ought to worship.

6 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

7 tn Grk “Jesus answered and said to them.”

8 tn The word “people” is supplied in the translation to indicate that the pronoun (“you”) and verb (“do not know”) in Greek are plural.

9 sn You people do not know where I came from or where I am going. The ignorance of the religious authorities regarding Jesus’ origin works on two levels at once: First, they thought Jesus came from Galilee (although he really came from Bethlehem in Judea) and second, they did not know that he came from heaven (from the Father), and this is where he would return. See further John 7:52.
