John 3:8

Context
3:8 The wind 1  blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 2

John 5:30

Context
5:30 I can do nothing on my own initiative. 3  Just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, 4  because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who sent me. 5

John 9:27

Context
9:27 He answered, 6  “I told you already and you didn’t listen. 7  Why do you want to hear it 8  again? You people 9  don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?”

1 tn The same Greek word, πνεύματος (pneumatos), may be translated “wind” or “spirit.”

2 sn Again, the physical illustrates the spiritual, although the force is heightened by the word-play here on wind-spirit (see the note on wind at the beginning of this verse). By the end of the verse, however, the final usage of πνεύματος (pneumatos) refers to the Holy Spirit.

3 tn Grk “nothing from myself.”

4 tn Or “righteous,” or “proper.”

5 tn That is, “the will of the Father who sent me.”

6 tn Grk “He answered them.” The indirect object αὐτοῖς (autois) has not been translated for stylistic reasons.

7 tn Grk “you did not hear.”

8 tn “It” is not in the Greek text but has been supplied. Direct objects in Greek were often omitted when they were clearly implied in the context.

9 tn The word “people” is supplied in the translation to clarify the plural Greek pronoun and verb.
