• [Joh 4:23] O Thou To Whom, In Ancient Time

  O Thou, to Whom, in ancient time, The lyre of Hebrews bards was strung, Whom kings adored in song sublime, And prophets praised with glowing tongue. Not now in Zion’s height alone The favored worshiper may dwell, Nor where, at sultry noon, Thy Son Sat weary by the patriarch’s well. From every place below the skies, The grateful song, the fervent prayer, The incense of the heart, may rise To heaven, and find acceptance there. O Thou to Whom, in ancient time, The lyre of prophet bards was strung, To Thee at last in every clime, Shall temples rise and praise be sung.

  Thou Son of God, whose flaming eyes Our inmost thoughts perceive, Accept the grateful sacrifice Which now to Thee we give. We bow before Thy gracious throne, And think ourselves sincere; But show us, Lord, is everyone Thy real worshiper? Is here a soul who knows Thee not, Nor feels his need of Thee; A stranger to the blood which bought His pardon on the tree? Convince him now of unbelief, His desperate state explain; And his fill his heart with sacred grief, And penitential pain. Speak with that voice that wakes the dead, And bid the sleeper rise, And bid his guilty conscience dread The death that never dies. Extort the cry, “What must be done To save a wretch like me? How shall a trembling sinner shun That endless misery? “I must this instant now begin, Out of my sleep to wake, And turn to God, and every sin Continually forsake. “I must for faith incessant cry, And wrestle, Lord, with Thee; I must be born again, or die To all eternity.”

  Come, Thou everlasting Spirit, Bring to every thankful mind All the Savior’s dying merit, All His sufferings for mankind! True Recorder of His passion, Now the living faith impart; Now reveal His great salvation; Preach His Gospel to our heart. Come, Thou Witness of His dying; Come, Remembrancer divine! Let us feel Thy power, applying Christ to every soul, and mine! Let us groan Thine inward groaning; Look on Him we pierced, and grieve; All receive the grace atoning, All the sprinkled blood receive.

  Enthroned on high, almighty Lord! The Holy Ghost send down; Fulfill in us Thy faithful word, And all Thy mercies crown. Though on our heads no tongues of fire Their wondrous powers impart, Grant, Savior, what we more desire, Thy Spirit in our heart. Spirit of life, and light, and love, Thy heav’nly influence give; Quicken our souls, our guilt remove, That we in Christ may live. To our benighted minds reveal The glories of His grace.   Holy Ghost, my Comforter, Now from highest Heaven appear, Shed Thy gracious radiance here. Thou the heart’s most precious Guest, Thou of comforters the best, Give to us, o’erladen, rest. Blessèd Sun of grace, o’er all Faithful hearts who on Thee call Let Thy light and solace fall. What without Thy aid is wrought, Skillful deed or wisest thought, God will count but vain and naught. Cleanse us, Lord, from sinful stain, On the parchèd spirit rain, Heal the wounded of its pain. Bend the stubborn will to Thine, Melt the cold with fire divine, Erring hearts to right incline.   We now implore God the Holy Ghost For the true faith, which we need the most, That in our last moments He may befriend us And, as homeward we journey, attend us. Lord, have mercy! Shine in our hearts, O most precious Light, That we Jesus Christ may know aright, Clinging to our Savior, whose blood hath bought us, Who again to our homeland hath brought us. Lord, have mercy! Thou sacred Love, grace on us bestow, Set our hearts with heav’nly fire aglow That with hearts united we love each other, Of one mind, in peace with every brother. Lord, have mercy! Thou highest Comfort in every need, Grant that neither shame nor death we heed, That e’en then our courage may never fail us When the foe shall accuse and assail us. Lord, have mercy!
