Differing Opinions About Jesus

7:40 When they heard these words, some of the crowd³ began to say, “This really⁴ is the Prophet!”⁵

¹tn That is, Christ.

²tn Grk “for not by measure does he give the Spirit” (an idiom). Leviticus Rabbah 15:2 states: “The Holy Spirit rested on the prophets by measure.” Jesus is contrasted to this. The Spirit rests upon him without measure.

³tn Or “The common people” (as opposed to the religious authorities like the chief priests and Pharisees).

⁴tn Or “truly.”

⁵sn The Prophet is a reference to the “prophet like Moses” of Deut 18:15, by this time an eschatological figure in popular belief.
