  The Holly and the Ivy Now both are full well grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, The Holly bears the crown. Refrain O the rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the quire, Sweet singing in the quire. The Holly bears a blossom, As white as lily-flower; And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To be our sweet Savior. Refrain The Holly bears a berry, As red as any blood; And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To do poor sinners good. • [Joh 19:5] O Sinner, Lift The Eye Of Faith

  O sinner, lift the eye of faith, To true repentance turning; Bethink thee of the curse of sin, Its awful guilt discerning; Upon the Crucified One look, And thou shalt read, as in a book, What well is worthy thy learning. Look on His head, that bleeding head, With crown of thorns surrounded; Look on His sacred hands and feet Which piercing nails have wounded; See every limb with scourges rent: On Him, the Just, the Innocent, What malice hath abounded! ’Tis not alone those limbs are racked, But friends, too, are forsaking; And, more than all, for thankless man That tender heart is aching; Oh, fearful was the pain and scorn, By Jesus, Son of Mary, borne, Their peace for sinners making. None ever knew such pain before, Such infinite affliction, None ever felt a grief like His In that dread crucifixion; For us He bare those bitter throes, For us those agonizing woes, In oft renewed infliction. O sinner, mark, and ponder well Sin’s awful condemnation; Think what a sacrifice it cost To purchase Thy salvation; Had Jesus never bled and died, Then what could thee and all betide But uttermost damnation? Lord, give us grace to flee from sin, And Satan’s wiles ensnaring, And from those everlasting flames For evil ones preparing. Jesu, we thank Thee, and entreat To rest forever at Thy feet, Thy heavenly glory sharing.

• [Joh 19:5] Ye That Pass By, Behold The Man

  Ye that pass by, behold the Man, The Man of grief condemned for you; The Lamb of God for sinners slain Weeping to Calvary pursue. His sacred limbs, they stretch, they tear, With nails they fasten to the wood— His sacred limbs exposed and bare, Or only covered with His blood. See there! His temples crowned with thorns, His bleeding hands extended wide; His streaming feet transfixed and torn, The fountain gushing from His side. Thou dear, Thou suff’ring Son of God, How doth Thy heart to sinners move! Sprinkle on us Thy precious blood, And melt us with Thy dying love.

• [Joh 19:17] Let Me Dwell On Golgotha

  Let me dwell on Golgotha, Weep and love my life away! While I see Him on the tree Weep and bleed, and die for me! That dear blood, for sinners spilt, Shows my sin in all its guilt: Ah, my soul, He bore thy load, Thou hast slain the Lamb of God. Hark! His dying words; “Forgive, Father, let the sinner live; Sinner, wipe thy tears away, I thy ransom freely pay.” While I hear this grace revealed, And obtain a pardon sealed; All my lost affections move, Wakened by the force of love. Farewell world, thy gold is dross, Now I see the bleeding cross; Jesus died to set me free From the law, and sin, and thee! He has dearly bought my soul Lord, accept, and claim the whole! To Thy will I all resign, Now, no more my own, but Thine.

  Stretched on the cross, the Savior dies, Hark! His expiring groans arise; See, how the sacred crimson tide Flows from His hands, His feet, His side. To suffer in the traitor’s place, To die for man—surprising grace! Yet pass rebellious angels by— O why for man, dear Savior, why? And didst Thou bleed? for sinners bleed? And could the sun behold the deed? No! he withdrew his sickening ray, And darkness veiled the mourning day. Can I survey this scene of woe, Where mingling grief and wonder flow, And yet my heart unmoved remain, Insensible to love or pain? Come, dearest Lord, Thy grace impart, To warm this cold, this stupid heart, Till all its powers and passions move, In melting grief, and ardent love.

  There is a green hill far away, Outside a city wall, Where the dear Lord was crucified, Who died to save us all. Refrain O dearly, dearly, has He loved, And we must love Him, too, And trust in His redeeming blood, And try His works to do. We may not know, we cannot tell, What pains He had to bear; But we believe it was for us He hung and suffered there. Refrain He died that we might be forgiv’n, He died to make us good, That we might go at last to Heav’n, Saved by His precious blood. • [Joh 19:34] At The Lamb’s High Feast We Sing

  At the Lamb’s high feast we sing, Praise to our victorious King, Who hath washed us in the tide Flowing from his piercèd side; Praise we Him, whose love divine Gives His sacred blood for wine, Gives His body for the feast, Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest. Where the Paschal blood is poured, Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel’s hosts triumphant go Through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal Victim, paschal Bread; With sincerity and love Eat we Manna from above. Mighty Victim from the sky, Hell’s fierce powers beneath Thee lie; Thou hast conquered in the fight, Thou hast brought us life and light; Now no more can death appall, Now no more the grave enthrall; Thou hast opened Paradise, And in Thee Thy saints shall rise. Paschal triumph, Easter joy, Only sin can this destroy; From sin’s death do Thou set free Souls reborn, O Lord, in Thee. Hymns of glory and of praise, Father, to Thee we raise; Risen Lord, all praise to Thee, Ever with the Spirit be.
