John 10:41

Context
10:41 Many 1  came to him and began to say, “John 2  performed 3  no miraculous sign, but everything John said about this man 4  was true!”

John 6:14

Context

6:14 Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus 5  performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophet 6  who is to come into the world.” 7

John 15:24

Context
15:24 If I had not performed 8  among them the miraculous deeds 9  that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. 10  But now they have seen the deeds 11  and have hated both me and my Father. 12

1 tn Grk “And many.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

2 sn John refers to John the Baptist.

3 tn Grk “did.”

4 tn Grk “this one.”

5 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 sn The Prophet is a reference to the “prophet like Moses” of Deut 18:15, by this time an eschatological figure in popular belief.

7 sn An allusion to Deut 18:15.

8 tn Or “If I had not done.”

9 tn Grk “the works.”

10 tn Grk “they would not have sin” (an idiom).

11 tn The words “the deeds” are supplied to clarify from context what was seen. Direct objects in Greek were often omitted when clear from the context.

12 tn Or “But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.” It is possible to understand both the “seeing” and the “hating” to refer to both Jesus and the Father, but this has the world “seeing” the Father, which seems alien to the Johannine Jesus. (Some point out John 14:9 as an example, but this is addressed to the disciples, not to the world.) It is more likely that the “seeing” refers to the miraculous deeds mentioned in the first half of the verse. Such an understanding of the first “both – and” construction is apparently supported by BDF §444.3.
