John 1:25

1:25 So they asked John, 1  “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, 2  nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

John 8:43

Context
8:43 Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept 3  my teaching. 4

John 12:5

Context
12:5 “Why wasn’t this oil sold for three hundred silver coins 5  and the money 6  given to the poor?”

John 18:21

Context
18:21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said. 7  They 8  know what I said.”

John 18:23

Context
18:23 Jesus replied, 9  “If I have said something wrong, 10  confirm 11  what is wrong. 12  But if I spoke correctly, why strike me?”

1 tn Grk “And they asked him, and said to him”; the referent (John) has been specified in the translation for clarity, and the phrase has been simplified in the translation to “So they asked John.”

2 tn Or “the Messiah” (Both Greek “Christ” and Hebrew and Aramaic “Messiah” mean “one who has been anointed”).

sn See the note on Christ in 1:20.

3 tn Grk “you cannot hear,” but this is not a reference to deafness, but rather hearing in the sense of listening to something and responding to it.

4 tn Grk “my word.”

5 tn Grk “three hundred denarii.” The denarius was a silver coin worth a standard day’s wage, so the value exceeded what a laborer could earn in a year (taking into account Sabbaths and feast days when no work was done).

6 tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied (as the proceeds from the sale of the perfumed oil).

7 tn Grk “Ask those who heard what I said to them.” The words “to them” are not translated since they are redundant in English.

8 tn Grk “Look, these know what I said.”

9 tn Grk “Jesus answered him.”

10 tn Or “something incorrect.”

11 tn Grk “testify.”

12 tn Or “incorrect.”
