  Lord, Thou hast promised grace for grace To all who daily seek Thy face; To them who have, Thou givest more Out of Thy vast, exhaustless store. Each step we take but gathers strength For further progress, till at length, With ease the highest steeps we gain, And count the mountain but a plain. Who watch, and pray, and work each hour Receive new life and added power, A power fresh victories to win Over the world, and self, and sin. Help us, O Lord, that we may grow In grace as Thou dost grace bestow; And still Thy richer gifts repeat Till grace in glory is complete.

  Herald, in the wilderness, Breaking up the road, Sinking mountains, raising plains, For the path of God; Prophet, to the multitudes Calling to repent, In the way of righteousness Unto Israel sent; Messenger, God’s chosen one Foremost to proclaim, Proffered titles passing by, Pointing to the Lamb. Captive, for the word of truth Boldly witnessing; Then in Herod’s dungeon cave, Faint and languishing; Martyr, sacrificed to sin At that feast of shame; As his life foreshowed the Lord, In his death the same— Holy Jesus, when He heard, Went apart to pray: Thus may we our lesson take From his saint today.

  On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry Announces that the Lord is nigh; Come, then, and hearken, for he brings Glad tidings from the King of kings! Then cleansed be every breast from sin; Make straight the way for God within; Prepare we in our hearts a home, Where such a mighty Guest may come. For Thou art our Salvation, Lord, Our Refuge, and our great Reward. Without Thy grace our souls must fade And wither like a flower decayed. Stretch forth Thine hand, to heal our sore, And make us rise and fall no more; Once more upon Thy people shine, And fill the world with love divine.   There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, A call from the ways untrod: Prepare in the desert a highway, A highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, The lofty hills brought low; Make straight all the crooked places, Where the Lord our God may go! O Zion, that bringest good tidings, Get thee up to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people The coming of their King. Like the flowers of the field they perish, The works of men decay, The power and pomp of nations Shall pass like a dream away. But the word of our God endureth, The arm of the Lord is strong; He stands in the midst of nations, And He will right the wrong. He shall feed His flock like a shepherd, And fold the lambs to His breast; In pastures of peace He’ll lead them, And give to the weary rest.   Jesus, Son of God most high, God from all eternity, Born as man to live and die, Hear us, holy Jesus. Leaving Thine eternal throne, Making mortal cares Thine own, Making God’s compassion known, Hear us, holy Jesus. By Thy life, so lone and still, By Thy waiting to fulfill In its time Thy Father’s will, Hear us, holy Jesus. May we mark the pattern fair Of Thy life of work and prayer, And for truth all perils dare, Hear us, Holy Jesus.
