will you not let me alone 3

long enough to swallow my spittle?

Job 27:7

Context
The Condition of the Wicked

27:7 “May my enemy be like the wicked, 4

my adversary 5  like the unrighteous. 6

1 tn Heb “according to what [= how long] will you not look away from me.”

2 tn The verb שָׁעָה (shaah, “to look”) with the preposition מִן (min) means “to look away from; to avert one’s gaze.” Job wonders if God would not look away from him even briefly, for the constant vigilance is killing him.

3 tn The Hiphil of רָפָה (rafah) means “to leave someone alone.”

4 sn Of course, he means like his enemy when he is judged, not when he is thriving in prosperity and luxury.

5 tn The form is the Hitpolel participle from קוּם (qum): “those who are rising up against me,” or “my adversary.”

6 tc The LXX made a free paraphrase: “No, but let my enemies be as the overthrow of the ungodly, and they that rise up against me as the destruction of transgressors.”
