• [Job 38:7] Almighty Spirit, Now Behold

  Almighty Spirit, now behold A world by sin destroyed: Creating Spirit, as of old, Move on the formless void, Move on the formless void. Give Thou the Word: that healing sound Shall quell the deadly strife; And earth again, like Eden crowned, Bring forth the tree of life, Bring forth the tree of life. If sang the morning stars for joy, When nature rose to view, What strains will angel harps employ, When Thou shalt all renew, When Thou shalt all renew! And if the sons of God rejoice To hear a Savior’s Name, How will the ransomed raise their voice To whom that Savior came, To whom that Savior came! Lo, every kindred, every tribe, Assembling round the throne, The new creation shall ascribe To sovereign love alone, To sovereign love alone!

  Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Cold on His cradle the dewdrops are shining; Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Savior of all! Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odors of Edom and offerings divine? Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would His favor secure; Richer by far is the heart’s adoration, Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

  The perfect world, by Adam trod, Was the first temple built by God; His fiat laid the corner stone, And heaved its pillars one by one.   Sound over all waters, reach out from all lands, The chorus of voices, the clasping of hands; Sing hymns that were sung by the stars of the morn, Sing songs of the angels when Jesus was born. Blow, bugles of battle, the marches of peace; East, west, north, and south, let the strong quarrel cease; Sing songs of great joy that the angels began, Of glory to God and of good will to man.

  Stars of the morning, so gloriously bright, Filled with celestial splendor and light, These that, where night never followeth day, Raise the “Thrice Holy” song ever and aye. These are Thy ministers, these dost Thou own, God of Sabaoth, the nearest Thy throne; These are Thy messengers, These dost Thou send, Help of the helpless ones! man to defend. “Who like the Lord?” thunders Michael the chief; Raphael, “the cure of God,” comforteth grief; And, as at Nazareth, prophet of peace, Gabriel, “the light of God,” bringeth release. Then, when the earth was first poised in mid space, Then, when the planets first sped on their race, Then, when were ended the six days’ employ, Then all the sons of God shouted for joy. Still let them succor us; still let them fight, Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right; Till, where their anthems they ceaselessly pour, We with the angels may bow and adore.
