Job 41:33

Context

41:33 The likes of it is not on earth,

a creature 7  without fear.

1 sn The word translated “his majesty” or “his splendor” (שְׂאֵתוֹ, sÿeto) forms a play on the word “show partiality” (תִּשָּׂאוּן, tissaun) in the last verse. They are both from the verb נָשַׂא (nasa’, “to lift up”).

2 tn On this verb in the Piel, see 7:14.

3 tn Heb “His dread”; the suffix is a subjective genitive.

4 tc The noun means “my pressure; my burden” in the light of the verb אָכֲף (’akhaf, “to press on; to grip tightly”). In the parallel passages the text used “hand” and “rod” in the hand to terrify. The LXX has “hand” here for this word. But simply changing it to “hand” is ruled out because the verb is masculine.

5 tn See Job 9:34 and 13:21.

6 sn The phrase “wise of heart” was used in Job 9:4 in a negative sense.

7 tn Heb “one who was made.”
