Jeremiah 6:11

Context

6:11 I am as full of anger as you are, Lord, 1

I am tired of trying to hold it in.”

The Lord answered, 2

“Vent it, then, 3  on the children who play in the street

and on the young men who are gathered together.

Husbands and wives are to be included, 4

as well as the old and those who are advanced in years.

Jeremiah 31:40

Context
31:40 The whole valley where dead bodies and sacrificial ashes are thrown 5  and all the terraced fields 6  out to the Kidron Valley 7  on the east as far north 8  as the Horse Gate 9  will be included within this city that is sacred to the Lord. 10  The city will never again be torn down or destroyed.”

Jeremiah 41:10

Context
41:10 Then Ishmael took captive all the people who were still left alive in Mizpah. This included the royal princesses 11  and all the rest of the people in Mizpah that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, had put under the authority of Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took all these people captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

Jeremiah 43:6

Context
43:6 They also led off all the men, women, children, and royal princesses 12  that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, had left with Gedaliah, 13  the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan. This included the prophet Jeremiah and Baruch son of Neriah.

1 tn Heb “I am full of the wrath of the Lord.”

2 tn These words are not in the text but are implicit from the words that follow. They are supplied in the translation for clarity.

3 tn Heb “Pour it out.”

4 tn Heb “are to be captured.”

5 sn It is generally agreed that this refers to the Hinnom Valley which was on the southwestern and southern side of the city. It was here where the people of Jerusalem had burned their children as sacrifices and where the Lord had said that there would be so many dead bodies when he punished them that they would be unable to bury all of them (cf. Jer 7:31-32). Reference here may be to those dead bodies and to the ashes of the cremated victims. This defiled place would be included within the holy city.

6 tc The translation here follows the Qere and a number of Hebrew mss in reading שְׁדֵמוֹת (shÿdemot) for the otherwise unknown word שְׁרֵמוֹת (shÿremot) exhibiting the common confusion of ר (resh) and ד (dalet). The fields of Kidron are mentioned also in 2 Kgs 23:4 as the place where Josiah burned the cult objects of Baal.

7 sn The Kidron Valley is the valley that joins the Hinnom Valley in the southeastern corner of the city and runs northward on the east side of the city.

8 tn The words “on the east” and “north” are not in the text but are supplied in the translation to give orientation.

9 sn The Horse Gate is mentioned in Neh 3:28 and is generally considered to have been located midway along the eastern wall just south of the temple area.

10 tn The words “will be included within this city that is” are not in the text. The text merely says that “The whole valley…will be sacred to the Lord.” These words have been supplied in the translation because they are really implicit in the description of the whole area as being included within the new city plan, not just the Hinnom and terraced fields as far as the Kidron Valley.

sn The area that is here delimited is larger than any of the known boundaries of Jerusalem during the OT period. Again, this refers to the increase in population of the restored community (cf. 31:27).

11 tn Heb “the daughters of the king.” Most commentators do not feel that this refers to the actual daughters of Zedekiah since they would have been too politically important to have escaped exile with their father. As noted in the translator’s note on 36:26 this need not refer to the actual daughters of the king but may refer to other royal daughters, i.e., the daughters of other royal princes.

12 tn Heb “the daughters of the king.” See the translator’s note on 41:10.

13 sn This refers to the group mentioned in Jer 40:7 and 41:10. The two groups together constituted all the people who were at Mizpah when Gedaliah was murdered, had been taken captive by Ishmael, had been rescued by Johanan and the other army officers, and had consulted Jeremiah at Geruth Chimham.
