Jeremiah 5:15-16

Context

5:15 The Lord says, 1  “Listen, 2  nation of Israel! 3

I am about to bring a nation from far away to attack you.

It will be a nation that was founded long ago

and has lasted for a long time.

It will be a nation whose language you will not know.

Its people will speak words that you will not be able to understand.

5:16 All of its soldiers are strong and mighty. 4

Their arrows will send you to your grave. 5

Jeremiah 13:15

Context

13:15 Then I said to the people of Judah, 6

“Listen and pay attention! Do not be arrogant!

For the Lord has spoken.

Jeremiah 22:27

Context
22:27 You will never come back to this land to which you will long to return!” 7

1 tn Heb “oracle of the Lord.”

2 tn Heb “Behold!”

3 tn Heb “house of Israel.”

4 tn Heb “All of them are mighty warriors.”

5 tn Heb “his quiver [is] an open grave.” The order of the lines has been reversed to make the transition from “nation” to “their arrows” easier.

6 tn The words “Then I said to the people of Judah” are not in the text but are implicit from the address in v. 15 and the content of v. 17. They are supplied in the translation for clarity to show the shift from the Lord speaking to Jeremiah.

7 tn Heb “And unto the land to which they lift up their souls to return there, there they will not return.” Once again there is a sudden shift in person from the second plural to the third plural. As before the translation levels the pronouns to avoid confusion. For the idiom “to lift up the soul to” = “to long/yearn to/for” see BDB 670 s.v. נָשָׂא 1.b(9).
