Jeremiah 5:14

Context

5:14 Because of that, 1  the Lord, the God who rules over all, 2  said to me, 3 

“Because these people have spoken 4  like this, 5 

I will make the words that I put in your mouth like fire.

And I will make this people like wood

which the fiery judgments you speak will burn up.” 6 

Jeremiah 10:5

Context

10:5 Such idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field.

They cannot talk.

They must be carried

because they cannot walk.

Do not be afraid of them

because they cannot hurt you.

And they do not have any power to help you.” 7 

Jeremiah 13:17

Context

13:17 But if you will not pay attention to this warning, 8 

I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride.

I will weep bitterly and my eyes will overflow with tears 9 

because you, the Lord’s flock, 10  will be carried 11  into exile.”

Jeremiah 32:30

32:30 This will happen because the people of Israel and Judah have repeatedly done what displeases me 12  from their earliest history until now 13  and because they 14  have repeatedly made me angry by the things they have done. 15  I, the Lord, affirm it! 16 

1 tn Heb “Therefore.”

2 tn Heb “The Lord God of armies.” See the translator’s note at 2:19.

sn Here the emphasis appears to be on the fact that the Lord is in charge of the enemy armies whom he will use to punish Israel for their denial of his prior warnings through the prophets.

3 tn The words, “to me” are not in the text but are implicit in the connection. They are supplied in the translation for clarification.

4 tn Heb “you have spoken.” The text here דַּבֶּרְכֶם (dabberkhem, “you have spoken”) is either a case of a scribal error for דַּבֶּרָם (dabberam, “they have spoken”) or an example of the rapid shift in addressee which is common in Jeremiah.

5 tn Heb “this word.”

6 tn Heb “like wood and it [i.e., the fire I put in your mouth] will consume them.”

7 tn Heb “And it is not in them to do good either.”

8 tn Heb “If you will not listen to it.” For the use of the feminine singular pronoun to refer to the idea(s) expressed in the preceding verse(s), see GKC 440-41 §135.p.

9 tn Heb “Tearing [my eye] will tear and my eye will run down [= flow] with tears.”

sn The depth of Jeremiah’s sorrow for the sad plight of his people, if they refuse to repent, is emphasized by the triple repetition of the word “tears” twice in an emphatic verbal expression (Hebrew infinitive before finite verb) and once in the noun.

10 tn Heb “because the Lord’s flock will…” The pronoun “you” is supplied in the translation to avoid the shift in English from the second person address at the beginning to the third person affirmation at the end. It also helps explain the metaphor of the people of Israel as God’s flock for some readers who may be unfamiliar with that metaphor.

11 tn The verb is once again in the form of “as good as done” (the Hebrew prophetic perfect).

12 tn Heb “that which is evil in my eyes.” For this idiom see BDB 744 s.v. עַיִן 3.c and compare usage in 18:10.

13 tn Heb “from their youth.”

sn Compare Jer 3:24-25; 11:21. The nation is being personified and reference is made to her history from the time she left Egypt onward (cf. 2:2).

14 tn Heb “the people of Israel.” However, since “people of Israel” has been used in the preceding line for the northern kingdom as opposed to the kingdom of Judah, it might lead to confusion to translate literally. Moreover, the pronoun “they” accomplishes the same purpose.

15 tn Heb “by the work of their hands.” See the translator’s note on 25:6 and the parallelism in 25:14 for this rendering rather than referring it to the making of idols as in 1:16; 10:3.

16 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”
