Jeremiah 4:2

Context

4:2 You must be truthful, honest and upright

when you take an oath saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’ 1

If you do, 2  the nations will pray to be as blessed by him as you are

and will make him the object of their boasting.” 3

Jeremiah 7:28

Context
7:28 So tell them: ‘This is a nation that has not obeyed the Lord their God and has not accepted correction. Faithfulness is nowhere to be found in it. These people do not even profess it anymore. 4

Jeremiah 29:10

Context

29:10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rule 5  are over will I again take up consideration for you. 6  Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restore 7  you to your homeland. 8

1 tn Heb “If you [= you must, see the translator’s note on the word “do” later in this verse] swear/take an oath, ‘As the Lord lives,’ in truth, justice, and righteousness…”

2 tn 4:1-2a consists of a number of “if” clauses, two of which are formally introduced by the Hebrew particle אִם (’im) while the others are introduced by the conjunction “and,” followed by a conjunction (“and” = “then”) with a perfect in 4:2b which introduces the consequence. The translation “You must…. If you do,” was chosen to avoid a long and complicated sentence.

3 tn Heb “bless themselves in him and make their boasts in him.”

4 tn Heb “Faithfulness has vanished. It is cut off from their lips.”

sn For the need for faithfulness see 5:1, 3.

5 sn See the study note on Jer 25:11 for the reckoning of the seventy years.

6 tn See the translator’s note on Jer 27:22 for this term.

7 tn Verse 10 is all one long sentence in the Hebrew original: “According to the fullness of Babylon seventy years I will take thought of you and I will establish my gracious word to you by bringing you back to this place.” The sentence has been broken up to conform better to contemporary English style.

8 tn Heb “this place.” The text has probably been influenced by the parallel passage in 27:22. The term appears fifteen times in Jeremiah and is invariably a reference to Jerusalem or Judah.

sn See Jer 27:22 for this promise.
