Judges 9:18

Context
9:18 But you have attacked 1  my father’s family 2  today. You murdered his seventy legitimate 3  sons on one stone and made Abimelech, the son of his female slave, king over the leaders of Shechem, just because he is your close relative. 4

Judges 16:9

Context
16:9 They hid 5  in the bedroom and then she said to him, “The Philistines are here, 6  Samson!” He snapped the bowstrings as easily as a thread of yarn snaps when it is put close to fire. 7  The secret of his strength was not discovered. 8

1 tn Heb “have risen up against.”

2 tn Heb “house.”

3 tn The word “legitimate” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation for clarification.

4 tn Heb “your brother.”

5 tn Heb “And the ones lying in wait were sitting for her.” The grammatically singular form וְהָאֹרֵב (vÿhaorev) is collective here, referring to the rulers as a group (so also in v. 16).

6 tn Heb “are upon you.”

7 tn Heb “when it smells fire.”

8 tn Heb “His strength was not known.”
