Judges 7:25

Context
7:25 They captured the two Midianite generals, Oreb and Zeeb. 1  They executed Oreb on the rock of Oreb and Zeeb 2  in the winepress of Zeeb. They chased the Midianites 3  and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was now on the other side of the Jordan River. 4

Judges 11:18

Context
11:18 Then Israel 5  went through the desert and bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab. They traveled east of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon River; 6  they did not go through Moabite territory (the Arnon was Moab’s border).

1 sn The names Oreb and Zeeb, which mean “Raven” and “Wolf” respectively, are appropriate because the Midianites had been like scavengers and predators to Israel.

2 tn The Hebrew text repeats the verb “executed.” This has not been repeated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

3 tn Heb “Midian.”

4 tn Heb “beyond the Jordan.” The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text but has been supplied in the translation for clarity (also in 8:4).

5 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Israel; the pronoun in the Hebrew text represents a collective singular) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
