Judges 20:1

Context
Civil War Breaks Out

20:1 All the Israelites from Dan to Beer Sheba 6  and from the land of Gilead 7  left their homes 8  and assembled together 9  before the Lord at Mizpah.

1 tn Heb “Midian, Amalek, and the sons of the east.”

2 tn The words “the Jordan River” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarification.

3 tc The translation assumes that the form in the Hebrew text (מֻצָּב, mutsav) is a corruption of an original מַצֵּבָה (matsevah, “pillar”). The reference is probably to a pagan object of worship (cf. LXX).

4 tn Heb “Sihon.” The proper name (“Sihon”) has been replaced in the translation by the pronoun (“he”) because of English style; a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant in English.

5 tn Heb “all his people” (also in the following verse).

6 sn Dan was located in the far north of the country, while Beer Sheba was located in the far south. This encompassed all the territory of the land of Canaan occupied by the Israelites.

7 sn The land of Gilead was on the eastern side of the Jordan River.

8 tn Heb “went out.”

9 tn Heb “and the assembly was convened as one man.”
