you who walk on the road, pay attention!

9:25 The leaders of Shechem rebelled against Abimelech by putting 2  bandits in 3  the hills, who robbed everyone who traveled by on the road. But Abimelech found out about it. 4

20:42 They retreated before the Israelites, taking the road to the wilderness. But the battle overtook 5  them as men from the surrounding cities struck them down. 6 

1 tn The meaning of the Hebrew word מִדִּין (middin, “saddle blankets”) in this context is uncertain.

2 tn Heb “set against him bandits.”

sn Putting bandits in the hills. This piracy certainly interrupted or discouraged trade, and probably deprived Abimelech of tariffs or tribute. See C. F. Burney, Judges, 277; G. F. Moore, Judges (ICC), 253.

3 tn Heb “on the tops of.”

4 tn Heb “It was told to Abimelech.”

5 tn Heb “clung to”; or “stuck close.”
