Judges 4:9

Context
4:9 She said, “I will indeed go with you. But you will not gain fame 1  on the expedition you are undertaking, 2  for the Lord will turn Sisera over to a woman.” 3  Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh.

Judges 9:54

Context
9:54 He quickly called to the young man who carried his weapons, 4  “Draw your sword and kill me, so they will not say, 5  ‘A woman killed him.’” So the young man stabbed him and he died.

Judges 13:9

Context
13:9 God answered Manoah’s prayer. 6  God’s angelic messenger visited 7  the woman again while she was sitting in the field. But her husband Manoah was not with her.

Judges 21:11

Context
21:11 Do this: 8  exterminate every male, as well as every woman who has had sexual relations with a male. 9  But spare the lives of any virgins.” So they did as instructed. 10

1 tn Or “honor.”

2 tn Heb “on [account of (?)] the way which you are walking.” Another option is to translate, “due to the way you are going about this.” In this case direct reference is made to Barak’s hesitancy as the reason for his loss of glory.

3 tn Heb “for into the hands of a woman the Lord will sell Sisera.”

4 tn The Hebrew text adds, “and said to him.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

5 tn The Hebrew text adds, “concerning me.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

6 tn Heb “God listened to the voice of Manoah.”

7 tn Heb “came to.”

8 tn Heb “And this is the thing that you will do.”

9 tn Heb “every woman who is familiar with the bed of a male.”

10 tc Some Greek witnesses (notably Codex Vaticanus [B]) add the words, “‘But the virgins you should keep alive.’ And they did so.” These additional words, which probably represent the original Hebrew text, can be retroverted: וְאֶת־הַבְּתוּלוֹת תְּחַיּוּ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ כֵן (veet-habbÿtulot tÿkhayyu vayyaasu khen). It is likely that a scribe’s eye jumped from the vav (ו) on וְאֶת (vÿet) to the initial vav of v. 11, accidentally leaving out the intervening letters. The present translation is based on this reconstruction.
