2:19 When a leader died, the next generation 1  would again 2  act more wickedly than the previous one. 3  They would follow after other gods, worshiping them 4  and bowing down to them. They did not give up 5  their practices or their stubborn ways.

Judges 4:19

4:19 He said to her, “Give me a little water to drink, because I’m thirsty.” She opened a goatskin container of milk and gave him some milk to drink. Then she covered him up again.

Judges 8:5

8:5 He said to the men of Succoth, “Give 6  some loaves of bread to the men 7  who are following me, 8  because they are exhausted. I am chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

Judges 8:24

Context
8:24 Gideon continued, 9  “I would like to make one request. Each of you give me an earring from the plunder you have taken.” 10  (The Midianites 11  had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.)

Judges 21:7

Context
21:7 How can we find wives for those who are left? 12  After all, we took an oath in the Lord’s name not to give them our daughters as wives.”

1 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the next generation) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 tn The verb שׁוּב (shuv, “to return; to turn”) is sometimes translated “turn back” here, but it is probably used in an adverbial sense, indicating that the main action (“act wickedly”) is being repeated.

3 tn Heb “their fathers.”

sn The statement the next generation would again act more wickedly than the previous one must refer to the successive sinful generations after Joshua, not Joshua’s godly generation (cf. vv. 7, 17).

4 tn Or “serving [them]”; or “following [them].”

5 tn Or “drop.”

6 tn Or perhaps, “sell.”

7 tn Heb “people.” The translation uses “men” because these were warriors and in ancient Israelite culture would have been exclusively males.

8 tn Heb “who are at my feet.”

9 tn Heb “said to them.”

10 tn Heb “Give to me, each one, an earring from his plunder.”

11 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the Midianites) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

12 tn Heb “What should we do for them, for the remaining ones, concerning wives?”
