Judges 7:16

7:16 He divided the three hundred men into three units. 1  He gave them all trumpets and empty jars with torches inside them. 2 

Judges 7:20

Context
7:20 All three units blew their trumpets and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hand and the trumpets in their right. 3  Then they yelled, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”

Judges 15:4-5

Context
15:4 Samson went and captured three hundred jackals 4  and got some torches. He tied the jackals in pairs by their tails and then tied a torch to each pair. 5  15:5 He lit the torches 6  and set the jackals loose in the Philistines’ standing grain. He burned up the grain heaps and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

1 tn Heb “heads.”

2 tn Heb “the jars.” The noun has been replaced by the pronoun (“them”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

sn They hid the torches inside the earthenware jars to disguise their approach and to keep the torches from being extinguished by the breeze.

3 tn The Hebrew text adds, “in order to blow [them].” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

4 tn Traditionally, “foxes.”

5 tn Heb “He turned tail to tail and placed one torch between the two tails in the middle.”

6 tn Heb “He set fire to the torches.”
