Isaiah 33:16

tn Heb “if you do not believe, you will not endure.” The verb forms are second plural; the Lord here addresses the entire Davidic family and court. (Verse 4 was addressed to the king.) There is a wordplay in the Hebrew text, designed to draw attention to the alternatives set before the king (cf. 1:20). “Believe” (תַאֳמִינוּ, taaminu) is a Hiphil form of the verb אָמָן (’aman); “endure” (תֵאָמֵנוּ, teamenu) is a Niphal form of this same verb.

tn Heb “for the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain”; TEV “will protect Mount Zion”; NCV “will protect (rest on NLT) Jerusalem.”

tn Heb “under him,” i.e., “in his place.”

tc The marginal reading (Qere) is בְּמוֹ (bÿmo, “in”). The consonantal text (Kethib) has בְּמִי (bÿmi, “in the water of”).

tn Heb “In that day” (so KJV).

tn Heb “his”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “deliverance he makes walls and a rampart.”

tn Heb “he [in the] exalted places will live.”

tn Heb “mountain strongholds, cliffs [will be] his elevated place.”
