Isaiah 7:7

7:7 For this reason the sovereign master, 1  the Lord, says:

“It will not take place;

it will not happen.

Isaiah 10:15

10:15 Does an ax exalt itself over the one who wields it,

or a saw magnify itself over the one who cuts with it? 2 

As if a scepter should brandish the one who raises it,

or a staff should lift up what is not made of wood!

Isaiah 44:15

44:15 A man uses it to make a fire; 5 

he takes some of it and warms himself.

Yes, he kindles a fire and bakes bread.

Then he makes a god and worships it;

1 tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here and in vv. 14, 19 is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

2 tn Heb “the one who pushes it back and forth”; KJV “him that shaketh it”; ASV “him that wieldeth it.”

3 tn Heb “in that day” (so KJV).

4 tn Heb “vineyard of delight,” or “vineyard of beauty.” Many medieval mss read כֶּרֶם חֶמֶר (kerem khemer, “vineyard of wine”), i.e., “a productive vineyard.”

5 tn Heb “and it becomes burning [i.e., firewood] for a man”; NAB “to serve man for fuel.”

6 tn Or perhaps, “them.”
