Isaiah 7:4

Context
7:4 Tell him, ‘Make sure you stay calm! 1  Don’t be afraid! Don’t be intimidated 2  by these two stubs of smoking logs, 3  or by the raging anger of Rezin, Syria, and the son of Remaliah.

Isaiah 14:8

Context

14:8 The evergreens also rejoice over your demise, 4

as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing, 5

‘Since you fell asleep, 6

no woodsman comes up to chop us down!’ 7

Isaiah 41:22

Context

41:22 “Let them produce evidence! Let them tell us what will happen!

Tell us about your earlier predictive oracles, 8

so we may examine them 9  and see how they were fulfilled. 10

Or decree for us some future events!

1 tn Heb “guard yourself and be quiet,” but the two verbs should be coordinated.

2 tn Heb “and let not your heart be weak”; ASV “neither let thy heart be faint.”

3 sn The derogatory metaphor indicates that the power of Rezin and Pekah is ready to die out.

4 tn Heb “concerning you.”

5 tn The word “singing” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. Note that the personified trees speak in the second half of the verse.

6 tn Heb “lay down” (in death); cf. NAB “laid to rest.”

7 tn Heb “the [wood]cutter does not come up against us.”

8 tn Heb “As for the former things, tell us what they are!”

9 tn Heb “so we might set [them to] our heart.”

10 tn Heb “and might know their outcome.”
