  Bright the vision that delighted Once the sight of Judah’s seer; Sweet the countless tongues united To entrance the prophet’s ear. Round the Lord in glory seated Cherubim and seraphim Filled His temple, and repeated Each to each the alternate hymn: “Lord, Thy glory fills the Heaven; Earth is with its fullness stored; Unto Thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord.” Heaven is still with glory ringing, Earth takes up the angels’ cry, “Holy, holy, holy,” singing, “Lord of hosts, the Lord most high.” With His seraph train before him, With His holy Church below, Thus conspire we to adore Him, Bid we thus our anthem flow. “Lord, Thy glory fills the Heaven; Earth is with its fullness stored; Unto Thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord.”

  Eternal Wisdom! Thee we praise, Thee the creation sings, With Thy loved Name, rocks, hills, and seas, And Heaven’s high palace rings. Thy hand, how wide it spreads the sky! How glorious to behold! Tinged with a blue of heavenly dye, And starred with sparkling gold. There Thou hast bid the globes of light Their endless circles run; There the pale planet rules the night, The day obeys the sun. If down I turn my wondering eyes On clouds and storms below, Those under-regions of the skies Thy numerous glories show. The noisy winds stand ready there Thy orders to obey; With sounding wings they sweep the air, To make Thy chariot way. There, like a trumpet loud and strong, Thy thunder shakes our coast, While the red lightnings wave along, The banners of Thy host. On the thin air, without a prop, Hang fruitful showers around; At Thy command they sink, and drop Their fatness on the ground. Lo! here Thy wondrous skill arrays The earth in cheerful green; A thousand herbs Thy art displays, A thousand flowers between. There, the rough mountains of the deep Obey Thy strong command, Thy breath can raise the billows steep, Or sink them to the sand. Thy glories blaze all nature round, And strike the wondering sight Through skies, and seas, and solid ground, With terror and delight. Infinite strength and equal skill Shine through Thy works abroad. Our souls with vast amazement fill. And speak the builder God. But the mild glories of Thy grace Our softer passions move; Pity divine in Jesu’s face We see, adore, and love.

  Father all holy, bend we so lowly, Glowing with love’s tender flame; Father in Heaven, praises be given, Hallowed forever Thy Name. Telling the story, spreading Thy glory, Send forth Thy people, we pray, Till every nation know Thy salvation, Under Thy kingdom’s full sway. Angels adore Thee, waiting before Thee, Swift Thy commands to fulfill: Grant us, we pray Thee, grace to obey Thee, Choosing and serving Thy will. Father, now lead us, day by day feed us, Ever provide and defend; Trespass confessing, seeking Thy blessing, Pardon and peace without end. From sin deliver, keep us forever, Kingdom and glory are Thine; Thine, too, the power, hear us this hour, Father, our Father divine! Jesus is pleading, still interceding, For His redeemed ones again, For His sake hear us, in His Name cheer us, He is the faithful “Amen.”

  Father and Friend! Thy light, Thy love, Beaming through all Thy works we see; Thy glory gilds the heavens above, And all the earth is full of Thee.   Great Giver of all good, To Thee our thanks we yield For all the beauties of the wood, Of hill, and dale, and field. Ten thousand various flowers To Thee sweet offerings bear, And joyous birds in woodlands bowers Sing forth Thy tender care. The fields on every side The trees on every hill, The glorious sun, the rolling tide, Proclaim Thy wonders still. But trees, and fields, and skies Still praise a God unknown; For gratitude and love can rise From living hearts alone.   The harp at Nature’s advent strung Has never ceased to play; The song the stars of morning sung Has never died away. And prayer is made, and praise is giv’n, By all things near and far; The ocean looketh up to Heav’n, And mirrors every star. Its waves are kneeling on the strand, As kneels the human knee, Their white locks bowing to the sand, The priesthood of the sea! They pour their glittering treasures forth, Their gifts of pearl they bring, And all the listening hills of earth Take up the song they sing. The green earth sends its incense up From many a mountain shrine; From folded leaf and dewy cup She pours her sacred wine. With drooping head and branches crossed The twilight forest grieves, Or speaks with tongues of Pentecost From all its sunlit leaves. The blue sky is the temple’s arch, Its transept earth and air, The music of its starry march The chorus of a prayer. So Nature keeps the reverent frame With which her years began, And all her signs and voices shame The prayerless heart of man.
