Isaiah 5:5

Context

5:5 Now I will inform you

what I am about to do to my vineyard:

I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture, 1

I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there. 2

Isaiah 30:13

Context

30:13 So this sin will become your downfall.

You will be like a high wall

that bulges and cracks and is ready to collapse;

it crumbles suddenly, in a flash. 3

Isaiah 36:11

Context

36:11 Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the chief adviser, “Speak to your servants in Aramaic, 4  for we understand it. Don’t speak with us in the Judahite dialect 5  in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

Isaiah 59:10

Context

59:10 We grope along the wall like the blind,

we grope like those who cannot see; 6

we stumble at noontime as if it were evening.

Though others are strong, we are like dead men. 7

1 tn Heb “and it will become [a place for] grazing.” בָּעַר (baar, “grazing”) is a homonym of the more often used verb “to burn.”

2 tn Heb “and it will become a trampled place” (NASB “trampled ground”).

3 tn The verse reads literally, “So this sin will become for you like a breach ready to fall, bulging on a high wall, the breaking of which comes suddenly, in a flash.” Their sin produces guilt and will result in judgment. Like a wall that collapses their fall will be swift and sudden.

4 sn Aramaic was the diplomatic language of the Assyrian empire.

5 tn Or “in Hebrew” (NIV, NCV, NLT); NAB, NASB “in Judean.”

6 tn Heb “like there are no eyes.”

7 tn Heb among the strong, like dead men.”
