Isaiah 5:12

Context

5:12 They have stringed instruments, 1  tambourines, flutes,

and wine at their parties.

So they do not recognize what the Lord is doing,

they do not perceive what he is bringing about. 2

1 tn Two types of stringed instruments are specifically mentioned in the Hebrew text, the כִּנּוֹר (kinnor, “zither”) and נֶבֶל (nevel, “harp”).

2 tn Heb “the work of the Lord they do not look at, and the work of his hands they do not see.” God’s “work” can sometimes be his creative deeds, but in this context it is the judgment that he is planning to bring upon his people (cf. vv. 19, 26; 10:12; 28:21).

3 tn The words “I will do this” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The Hebrew text has here simply, “in order that.”

Some have suggested an emendation to שַׁחֲדָהּ (shakhadah), a suffixed infinitive from שָׁחַד (shakhad, “[how] to buy it off”; see BDB 1005 s.v. שָׁחַד). This forms a nice parallel with the following couplet. The above translation is based on a different etymology of the verb in question. HALOT 1466 s.v. III שׁחר references a verbal root with these letters (שׁחד) that refers to magical activity.

13 tn Heb “you will not know”; NIV “you cannot foresee.”

14 tc Heb “fear.” A few medieval Hebrew mss read “see.”

15 tn Heb “and they fear from the west the name of the Lord.”

16 tn Heb “and from the rising of the sun his splendor.”
