Isaiah 49:23
Context49:23 Kings will be your children’s 1 guardians;
their princesses will nurse your children. 2
With their faces to the ground they will bow down to you
and they will lick the dirt on 3 your feet.
Then you will recognize that I am the Lord;
those who wait patiently for me are not put to shame.
Isaiah 66:5
Context66:5 Hear the word of the Lord,
you who respect what he has to say! 4
Your countrymen, 5 who hate you
and exclude you, supposedly for the sake of my name,
say, “May the Lord be glorified,
then we will witness your joy.” 6
But they will be put to shame.
1 tn Heb “your,” but Zion here stands by metonymy for her children (see v. 22b).
2 tn Heb “you.” See the preceding note.
3 tn Or “at your feet” (NAB, NIV); NLT “from your feet.”
4 tn Heb “who tremble at his word.”
5 tn Heb “brothers” (so NASB, NIV); NRSV “Your own people”; NLT “Your close relatives.”
6 tn Or “so that we might witness your joy.” The point of this statement is unclear.
